EAR IRRIGATION

CQC Registered Provider

Ear wax plays an important role in protecting the ears; however, sometimes it can build up and cause symptoms such as reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), dizziness, or discomfort. Ear irrigation is a safe and effective method of removing excess ear wax from the ear canal. The procedure uses a controlled flow of warm water to gently flush out softened wax and debris, helping to restore hearing, relieve discomfort, and improve overall ear health.

What to Expect During Your Ear Wax Removal Appointment Before Your Appointment: For the best results, we recommend using olive oil drops in the affected ear(s) 2–3 times daily for at least 5 days before your appointment. This helps to soften the ear wax and can make removal easier and more comfortable. Assessment: Your appointment will begin with a consultation and ear examination. Using a specialised otoscope, your ears will be assessed to determine whether wax removal is appropriate and which method is most suitable for you. Ear Wax Removal: If ear wax removal is clinically appropriate, ear irrigation may be performed. Ear irrigation involves gently flushing the ear canal with warm water to remove excess wax and debris. The procedure is usually quick, safe, and well tolerated by most people. After Treatment: Once the wax has been removed, your ears will be re-examined to ensure the ear canal is clear and healthy. You may notice an immediate improvement in hearing and comfort. You will also receive advice on ongoing ear care and how to help prevent future wax build-up. *Important Information:* Ear irrigation is not suitable for everyone. If you have a history of ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, recurrent ear infections, or certain other ear conditions, an alternative treatment or referral may be recommended following assessment. Your safety is our priority, and treatment will only be carried out when it is clinically appropriate to do so.
