What is Ear Irrigation?
Ear irrigation is a safe and effective procedure used to remove excess or impacted ear wax using a gentle flow of warm water. While ear wax plays an important role in protecting the ear, a build-up can sometimes cause symptoms such as reduced hearing, blocked ears, discomfort, tinnitus, or dizziness. Ear irrigation can help relieve these symptoms and improve hearing and comfort.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Your appointment will begin with a thorough ear health assessment. Using a specialised otoscope, your ears will be examined to determine whether ear wax is present and whether ear irrigation is the most suitable treatment option for you.
If treatment is appropriate, warm water will be gently introduced into the ear canal to soften and remove the wax. The procedure is typically quick, comfortable, and well tolerated by most patients.
Following treatment, your ears will be re-examined to ensure the wax has been successfully removed and to check the health of the ear canal and eardrum.
Preparing for Your Appointment
For the best results, we recommend using olive oil ear drops for up to 5 days before your appointment. This helps soften the wax and can make removal easier and more comfortable.
